Family-Friendly Things to Do in Bay County (Besides the Beach)

When people think about Bay County, Florida, their minds usually go straight to the beach.

And don't get me wrong, our beaches are gorgeous.

But one of the things I love most about living here is that there are so many family-friendly things to do in Bay County that don't involve packing a cooler, shaking sand out of your car for three weeks, or arguing over whose turn it is to carry the beach chairs.

Whether you're new to the area, stationed at Tyndall, visiting family, or simply looking for something different to do this weekend, here are some of my favorite things to do in Bay County with kids.

Adventure Awaits

If your family enjoys a little friendly competition, Bay County delivers.

Challenge each other at Pirates Island Adventure Golf, race go-karts at Swampy Jack's Wongo Adventure, or spend the day cooling off at Shipwreck Island Waterpark when Florida decides to turn the thermostat up to "surface of the sun."

For families looking for something a little more adventurous, dolphin cruises, Shell Island excursions, pirate-themed cruises, and snorkeling tours are always crowd-pleasers. Kids get excited about spotting dolphins, parents get to enjoy the scenery, and everyone leaves with stories to tell.

And if your crew enjoys dinner with a side of sword fights and pirate shenanigans, Pirate's Voyage is guaranteed to keep everyone entertained.

Prefer paddles over propellers? Econfina Creek is one of the Panhandle's hidden gems. Rent a kayak or canoe and spend the day floating through crystal-clear spring-fed waters while soaking in some of Florida's natural beauty. It's one of those places that reminds you why people fall in love with this area.

Parks Worth Exploring

Some of the best family activities in Bay County cost little to nothing.

Lynn Haven has some fantastic parks for families. Sharon Sheffield Park, A.L. Kinsaul Park, and Cain Griffin Park offer playgrounds, walking trails, sports fields, splash pads, and plenty of room for kids to burn energy while parents enjoy a few peaceful minutes on a bench.

For nature lovers, St. Andrews State Park offers hiking trails, wildlife viewing, kayaking, fishing, and opportunities to explore one of Florida's most beautiful coastal ecosystems.

You'll also find dozens of neighborhood parks, sports complexes, walking trails, and waterfront green spaces throughout Panama City, Panama City Beach, Lynn Haven, and Callaway, making it easy to get outside year-round.

Rainy Day Rescue Plan

Florida weather can be a little unpredictable.

One minute you're planning an outdoor adventure and the next you're watching a thunderstorm roll in.

When that happens, the Science and Discovery Center of Northwest Florida is a great option for younger children who enjoy hands-on exhibits and interactive learning.

The Man in the Sea Museum is another local favorite. Kids fascinated by diving, submarines, underwater exploration, or anything that looks like it belongs in an adventure movie usually have a blast exploring the exhibits.

Festivals, Music, and Downtown Fun

Something Bay County does exceptionally well is finding reasons to celebrate.

Downtown Panama City stays busy throughout the year with farmers markets, food truck events, art walks, live music, holiday celebrations, and community gatherings.

Some local favorites include Oktoberfest, the Christmas Parade of Lights, and the Panama City Songwriters Festival. Throughout the summer you'll also find concert series and community events popping up across Panama City, Lynn Haven, and surrounding communities. The Gulf Coast State College Summer Concert Series is another great option for families looking for an evening out.

If you're looking for something fun to do this weekend, checking local event calendars is rarely a bad idea.  There's a good chance you'll find an event happening somewhere in the county.

Farm Life and Seasonal Traditions

Living in Bay County means you can enjoy coastal adventures and country charm all in the same weekend.

Throughout the year, local farms offer pumpkin patches, sunflower fields, petting zoos, seasonal festivals, and U-pick opportunities that have become annual traditions for many local families.

Yates Farm is a local favorite for family-friendly seasonal events, while Sweet Season Farms draws visitors from across the Panhandle for its fall activities, corn maze, and festivals.

These are the places where you'll leave with muddy shoes, too many photos on your phone, and kids already asking when they can come back next weekend.

Day Trips Worth the Drive

Another thing I love about living in Bay County is how many incredible family adventures are within an easy drive.

Florida Caverns State Park in Marianna stands out as one of Florida's most unexpected adventures. Guided cave tours take visitors through stunning limestone formations, underground rooms, and winding passageways that feel more like something you'd find in Tennessee than Florida. It's a favorite for visiting family and adventurous kids.

Eden Gardens State Park in Santa Rosa Beach offers a completely different experience. Between the massive moss-draped oak trees, beautiful gardens, and historic Wesley House, it's one of the most picturesque spots in the Florida Panhandle. Bring a picnic and plan to spend a relaxing afternoon exploring the grounds.

Another family favorite is Ponce de Leon Springs State Park. The spring stays a refreshing 68 degrees year-round, making it a perfect place to cool off during the warmer months. The clear water, picnic areas, and nature trails make it an easy day trip that both kids and adults enjoy.

There's Always Something to Do

One of the biggest surprises for families moving to Bay County is discovering how much there is to do beyond the beach.

From kayaking Econfina Creek and exploring state parks to festivals, mini golf, dolphin cruises, local farms, cave tours, and community events, there's no shortage of ways to make memories together.
